Don't Call Us "Bone Crunchers"

Myth: Spinal Adjustments Hurt

The fact is, most of our patients experience instant relief from pain or tension following an adjustment. Some even look forward to their regular adjustment because they feel so much better afterwards.

Those suffering from frequent bouts of neck or back pain may experience some discomfort because their spine and surrounding muscles are getting accustomed to lining up correctly, but for most this is not the case.

Myth: Spinal Adjustments Are Dangerous

In the hands of a licensed chiropractor, such as Dr. Patrick Murray, a spinal adjustment is one of the safest, most effective treatments out there.

The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) concluded that "the risk of complications from lumbar spinal manipulation is rare, and that conservative treatments, such as lumbar spinal manipulation should be considered before surgical intervention."

What's more, they stated that "prescription drugs such as oral steroids and anti-depressants are not recommended for acute low back problems."

Myth: Chiropractors Aren't as Educated as "Regular" Doctors

With the exception of pharmacology and surgery, chiropractors undergo as rigorous an education process as any other doctor. Prior to entering chiropractic college, potential practitioners take 2-4 years of Pre-Med undergraduate studies.

After that, it's another 4-5 years at chiropractic college, during which time the student participates in patient case management and other real-life experience. Upon licensure with both the National and State Board, he or she is good to go.

Even then, most practitioners regularly take continuing education courses to keep abreast of the latest techniques and trends.

Myth: Chiropractic Care is Expensive

Compared to other medical specialties, chiropractic care is a bargain, even for those paying out-of-pocket! According to a Canadian government-sponsored study conducted in the 1990s, "there would be highly significant cost savings if more management of low-back pain was transferred from physicians to chiropractors.

Users of chiropractic care have substantially lower health care costs, especially inpatient costs, than those who use medical care only." You also have to bear the cost of prescription pain killers, which you run the risk of getting addicted to.

Myth: Once You Get Chiropractic Care, You'll Have to Get It for the Rest of Your Life

Your dentist recommends getting your teeth cleaned every 6 months. Your doctor recommends yearly physicals, as well as other tests like mammograms, PAP smears, and such. Do you think they'd tell you to just see them once every 20 years and forget it?

Chiropractic care is similar. Depending on your particular needs, you might benefit from monthly adjustments, others less often. Long story short, just think of chiropractic care as a regular and integral part of your sensible health care regimen.

Myth: Chiropractors Only Treat Back Pain

Many everyday ailments can be directly traced back to a misalignment of the spine. PMS, headaches, knee problems, hip pain, inflammation, fibromyalgia, digestive problems, just to name a few.
